Episode 1 — How Elections to Moscow City Parliament Led to Mass Protests

In July 2019, two months before the elections to Moscow City Parliament, a number of potential independent candidates were refused registration for the elections. That has caused largest street protests since 2012. Why did it happen? And how exactly did the events unfold?

The first part of this episode discusses the rules for a candidate to be registered for the elections, while the second describes how general public reacted to the fact that electoral committees refused to register any independent candidates. Mass protests led to heavy crackdown on the participants, including injuries, administrative arrests and criminal charges.
